Stop the Pig Farm!
A plan is in the works for a 500+ head industrial hog farm at 5071 Bachman Road in Upper Milford Township. The site will raise hogs as a subcontractor for a large pork producer. This is not friendly, local or traditional farming.
It should be made abundantly clear that we are not anti-farming or agriculture. The concern is that a high density Concentrated Animal Operation will be placed in a setting completely surrounded by existing homes. The quality of life of the residents will be substantially affected as described below.

The proposed hog farm includes a Concentrated Animal Operation (CAO)
CAOs and their effects on public health have been studied extensively across the United States and Canada. Dangers to residents in the surrounding areas are many.
Toxic Gases: Industrial hog houses release airborne ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulfide. These gases directly cause eye irritation, sore throats, dizziness and issues with memory.
Respiratory Conditions: Numerous studies link hog farm emissions to higher rates of asthma, wheezing, coughing and reduced lung function. Effects have been seen as far as two miles away, especially in the direction of prevailing winds. CAREX Canada
Bacterial Infections: Livestock farms typically use large quantities of antibiotics. Neighbors face a substantially higher risk of acquiring antibiotic-resistant infections including MRSA, even without direct animal contact. National Institutes of Health

- The Smell: The fresh air that blows through our yards and homes will be replaced with the smells of manure, dead pigs and the fumes from trucks and other machinery.
- Noise: Hog farms of this capacity require large fans to exhaust the heat and stink out of the building. Forget about those peaceful, quiet nights on the mountain.
- Traffic: An operation of this size and scale will require a steady flow of large trucks. The roads and intersections around the site are undersized for the anticipated traffic. Our children play and and board their school buses at the key intersections.
- Decreased Property Values: Real estate transaction history demonstrates that homes around hog farms have their property values reduced by 10-50%.
- Groundwater Contamination: All homes in the area have private wells. Manure and its by-products can find their way into your water. Who will pay for the water quality monitoring and treatment of your well?
Our neighborhood is one where nobody would consider doing anything that would affect the quality of life of those around them, even for a profit. It's important for us and our future generations to maintain this moral, ethical and spiritual principle.
